Dexamethasone is a very potent corticostcriod, which main effect arc as follows :

Anti-inflammatory activity : 20 to 30 times more potent than cortisol.

neoglycogenesic activity  : 20 to 30 times more potent than cortisol.

mineralocorticoid activity : (retention of sodium and water) : practically no effect on electrolyte balance.

Dexamethasone is used for its anti-inflammatory and immunosusppressant glucocorticoid Properties, which suppress the clinical manifestations of disease in a wide range of disorders (allergic disorders : asthma, eczema, ketosis, pregnancy toxaemia, lameness, arthritis.The parenteral route allows to act in severe disease or if an emergency arises (acute anaphylaxis).

Equidae, cattle, sheep, and goats : anti-inflammatory treatment.

Parenteral route : I.M., I.V., S.C., intra and periarticutar.

1 to 5 ml per 100 kg, for 1 to 3 consecutive days, without exceeding 20 ml per animal :   

Adult horses : 1.5 to 2 ml per 100 kg of live weight.   

Foals : 2.5 to 5 ml per 100 kg of live weight.   

Adult cattle : 1.5 ml per 100 kg of live weight.   

Young cattle : 2.5 to 5 ml per 100 kg of live weight.   

Sheep and goats : 1.5 ml per 100 kg of live weight.

 

Renal dysfunctions, diabetes.

Do not use in pregnant female during the second half of pregnancy.

Viral diseases (corticosteroids generally decreases the efficacy of the immune system).

Do not use in the beginning of the lactating period (corticosteroids inhibit temporarily the lacteal secretion).

Treated animals should not be slaughtered for human consumption during treatment and within 6 days after the end of the treatment. Milk taken from dairy females during treatment and for 6 milking's after treatment must not be delivered to human consumption.
